When Labor Day arrives, many homeowners begin thinking that landscaping season is coming to an end.
It's not.
In fact, September and fall offer some excellent opportunities to improve your property. Cooler temperatures make working outdoors more comfortable, summer heat stress begins to disappear, and there's still plenty of time to plant trees and shrubs, repair lawns, install pavers and complete outdoor projects before winter.

🍁 Why Is Fall a Good Time to Plant?
Spring gets most of the attention when people think about planting, but fall can be an excellent time to plant many trees and shrubs.
As temperatures begin to cool, newly planted material experiences less summer heat stress. Meanwhile, the soil can remain warm enough to encourage continued root development.
That gives many newly planted trees and shrubs an opportunity to begin establishing their root systems before winter and can give them a head start before the heat of the following summer.
Don't stop watering just because temperatures have cooled down. Newly planted trees and shrubs still need adequate moisture while their roots become established. Keep an eye on rainfall and soil moisture throughout the fall.
🌲 Fall Is a Great Time to Add Privacy
If adding privacy to your backyard has been on your project list, fall is a great time to get started.

Fall is also a good time to clean up planting beds, redefine edges and refresh mulch or decorative stone.
Mulch can help conserve soil moisture and moderate soil temperatures, but remember that more mulch isn't always better.
Never pile mulch against the trunk of a tree. Keep mulch pulled back from the trunk and root flare rather than creating a mound around it.
