Benefits of Proper Mulching

  • Reduces soil splash around plants
  • Creates a clean, finished appearance
Popular Uses
  • Tree and shrub beds
  • Foundation plantings
  • Flower and perennial gardens
  • Property borders and entrances

Recommended Mulch Depth: Generally 2–3 Inches

For most established landscape beds, apply enough mulch to maintain a total depth of approximately 2–3 inches. If old mulch is already present, loosen it and measure the existing depth before adding more.

More is not better. Excessively deep mulch can restrict air and water movement, retain too much moisture and contribute to plant-health problems.

Never Pile Mulch Against Tree Trunks or Shrub Stems

Keep mulch pulled back from trunks, root flares and plant stems. “Mulch volcanoes” can trap moisture against bark, encourage decay, conceal damage and create conditions favorable to pests.
