How to Get Better Germination
1. Prepare the Soil
Remove debris, loosen compacted soil and rake the area smooth. For overseeding, mow lower than usual and remove excess thatch.
2. Apply Evenly
Follow the package rate. Apply half the seed in one direction and the remainder across it for more uniform coverage.
3. Create Seed-to-Soil Contact
Rake lightly so the seed contacts the soil without being buried too deeply. Firm the seedbed gently.
4. Keep the Seedbed Moist
Water lightly and frequently enough to prevent the surface from drying out. Reduce frequency gradually as the new grass becomes established.
Best Time to Seed Cool-Season Lawns
- Best window: late summer into early fall, when soil remains warm and air temperatures begin to cool.
- Second choice: spring, once soil temperatures are suitable for germination.
- Avoid seeding immediately before extreme heat, heavy rain or extended dry conditions.
- Always follow the directions and coverage rates printed on the selected product label.
