How to Plant a Shrub
Whether your shrub will be an accent, foundation plant or border, correct planting depth and early watering make a major difference.
Choose a location suited to the shrub’s mature size and light needs.
Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper.
Set the top of the root ball level with—or slightly above—the surrounding soil.
Backfill with the existing soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
Add 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it several inches away from the stems.

How to Plant a Conifer
Conifers provide year-round color, privacy and structure. Careful spacing and deep watering help protect that long-term investment.
Plan for the plant’s mature width—do not space only for its size today.
Dig wide and shallow, and avoid burying the trunk flare.
Loosen circling roots when planting a container-grown conifer.
Water deeply after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
Continue deep, consistent watering through the first growing season.
