Most plants sold as tropicals are not winter-hardy outdoors in Staten Island or nearby New Jersey. They are generally enjoyed outside during warm weather and must be moved indoors before cold temperatures arrive if you want to keep them for another season.

Cold tolerance varies considerably by species. Watch nighttime temperatures and confirm the requirements of the specific plant rather than waiting for frost.

Tropical Plant Watering & Feeding

Container-grown tropicals can dry out quickly during hot or windy weather. Check the soil regularly and water thoroughly when needed, allowing excess water to drain from the container.

Water needs differ among species, and overwatering can be as damaging as allowing plants to become excessively dry. Follow the label directions when using fertilizer and avoid feeding a severely stressed or dry plant.

Bringing Tropical Plants Indoors

Plan ahead if you intend to overwinter tropical plants. Inspect them for insects, remove damaged foliage and move them indoors before temperatures fall below the safe range for that species.

Indoor light, humidity and watering conditions differ from outdoor conditions. Some leaf drop or adjustment may occur after plants are moved.
